Interview With Author Priscilla Masters

What type of books do you write? I write 2 series as well as medical stand-alones. One series features detective inspector Joanna Piercy set in the Leek moorlands of Staffordshire. I guess they'd be described as police procedurals & I wouldn't argue with that! My other series features coroner Martha Gunn and they're set in the lovely medieval town of Shrewsbury which is where I work. My medical stand-alones have dealt with such issues as the arrogance of a surgeon, the blurred line between sanity & insanity, the vulnerability of a female GP & across dresser (as yet unpublished).
What is your newest book about? My latest book is the 11th in the Joanna Piercy series and is about an actress from the 1960s who's making a real nuisance of herself calling the police out for apparently trivial incidents. What inspired you to write it?
The idea behind it was watching old black and white films and reflecting how much the world has changed(technology) and how little (people, their everyday lives and aspirations.)

What inspired you to write it? The writing process is a roller coaster, sometimes the most wonderful world to step into and at other times the slough of despond. (You'll know exactly what I mean whether it's inspiration, disappointing sales, contracts that fall through etc) The real world can seem a poor substitute for the imaginary one!

What did you do before you became an author? I still work three days a week as a respiratory nurse in the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. It's a demanding job but wonderful inspiration and an excellent research tool.

How does it feel to be a published author? I feel proud sometimes to be a published author and then I go to a "bookie" do & realize I'm not exactly an endangered species. I'm just the flea on the back of ... a small fish in a big but very exciting pond.

Any advice for struggling authors? My advice for anyone wanting to write is a) to enjoy it and b) to keep your head in the clouds but your feet firmly on the floor.

Where do you see book publishing going? It's going through tricky times. I think it'll always be with us but possibly much reduced.
