Interview With Author Megan Johnston

What type of books do you write? The type of books I love to write are young adult, paranormal romance. I decided on this genre because I wanted not only my teenage granddaughters to read them, but also anyone in general looking for something a little out of the norm. And, I don't believe there is enough out there in this age group.

What is your newest book about? My debut novel is called, Transition, The first book in the Chimera Hunters Series. I am currently writing number two in the series and hope to have it done by Christmas 2013. The novels are about a race of people who were condemned by the Gods because of their otherworldly powers, to search the earth until they found their one true mate for life, their Sodalis. These people are destined to live life without love, without dreams, without hope, until they find their one true mate in life.

What inspired you to write it? In November of 2010 a dear friend of our family passed away. It was then that I decided, life is to short not to do what you were always destined to do. For me, it was carrying on not only my passion, but my mother’s passion for writing as well. She loved romance stories and had written several novella's, but never had a chance to published them. She is who taught me the love of writing. I was hooked by the time I was fifteen years old. it wasn't until my 30's that I started reading paranormal romances. I have read them ever since.

What is the writing process like for you? The writing process was hard for me. I didn't start writing my first novel until I was 52, and I had so much to re-learn. From beginning to end, it took me 2 1/2 years. I joined critique and writing groups. And, a lot of extra learning on-line.

What did you do before you became an author? Before I became a writer, I was and still am a mother of 4 and a grandmother of 7. I am also an entrepreneur. I started my own business over 20 years ago in the cleaning industry and still manage it today. I also sell real estate. So, I keep extraordinary busy with my life. Now, it's all about juggling time.

How does it feel to be a published author? Oh my, even though I am an indie author, it feels incredible to be published. I have worked hard every day to get my novel out to the general public, and am getting incredible feedback.

Any advice for struggling writers? The only advice I have for the struggling writer is, keep on writing. Write every day, even if it's a grocery list. Write... write... write...and, always follow your passion, giving up should never be in your vocabulary.

Where do you see book publishing heading?  I see the book publishing business growing for self-published and indie authors. We are making a stand and the big houses are struggling to keep up. And, the ones who make sure their novels are professionally edited will go a long way.
