Interview With Author Carli Palmer

Shore House Slumming

1. What inspired you to write your book?
The idea just popped into my head one day while watching “Friday the 13th”. I wondered what a timid woman would do while house-sitting and something went wrong (like an ax murderer in the neighborhood). In Dana’s situations she comes upon more bad than good. It sounded like a funny plot and I'm all for funny and light-hearted.

2. What is it about?
The story is based around a woman named Dana who is down on her luck about a no housing situation for the summer but immediately finds opportunities for a house sitter in nearly every state she goes to. She is trying to make it from California to Florida to start a new job.

3. What do you hope will be the everlasting thoughts for readers who finish your book?
I just want readers to get a good laugh from the book. Everyone's been down on their luck sometime in their life and I'm sure they can relate to Dana in some way. But the best part is knowing that while you are having a bad day, a good day is right around the corner.

4. What advice do you have for writers?
Just write. Don't worry if it's misspelled, sloppy, or not perfect. Just get it down on paper. And take inspiration from anywhere. You never know if an idea will hit you when you're standing in line at the grocery store. I tend to believe that most writers are people watchers and they gain ideas from their observations.

5. Where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
Since self-publishing is hitting it's mark I think that the trend is headed that way. Anyone can write a book now which has a lot of people up in arms but some great books out there are self-published.

6. What challenges did you have in writing your book?
The editing and the marketing. I'm not an English major so grammar is not my strong suit and unless you hire a PR firm, your book will be lost in the masses.

7. If people can only buy one book this month, why should it be yours?
Easy - it's a great beach read. It hits on all things summer and who wouldn't want to read comedy and drama while lying on the beach somewhere. All you need is a tube of sunblock and a towel to go along with it.
