Interview With Author Fred Nour, M.D.

True Love: How to Use Science to Understand Love

Q-1. What really inspired you to write your book, to force you from taking an idea or experience and conveying it into a book?
It started by accident. A support group I had for Multiple Sclerosis (MS) patients had the meeting fall on Valentine's Day one year. The group wanted to hear something about love instead of MS. I gave a lecture about what I knew then about love. They kept asking for the same lecture every February. I added, deleted, and modified it as more information became available. In the past year, my two daughters reached ages 20 and 22, and began to think about love and marriage. Knowing the science behind love, I wanted to give them a realistic look at love. I wanted to protect them from the false information about love written by non-medical authors. I wrote my fatherly advice in a book.

Q-2. What is it about and whom do you believe is your targeted reader?
True Love is about understanding the reality of love, not the fantasy.  Our image of love is based on the perception of love by artists, poets, and so on. The book is for everyone who wants to understand love scientifically and objectively, as we all want love in this life.

Q-3. What do you hope will be the everlasting thoughts for readers who finish your book? What should remain with them long after putting it down?
Romance is not true love. Falling out of love is a normal phase in love. True love takes time and lasts for a lifetime, but it is not the same as falling in love. Also, we do not all have the same ability to love.

Q-4. What advice or words of wisdom do you have for fellow writers?
Write about what you know, not what you think people want to hear. Be genuine.

Q-5. What trends in the book world do you see and where do you think the book publishing industry is heading?
More books written by more authors will level the playing field where success depends on the author, not the publisher.

Q-6. What great challenges did you have in writing your book?
The greatest challenge I encountered was finding a way to explain very complex brain structures and functions in terms that everyone could understand and relate to. I had to think of different analogies to make the brain chemistry relatable to everyday life.

Q-7. If people can only buy one book this month, why should it be yours?
More people could succeed in finding the perfect mate and be happier with their love lives.
This book addresses a topic that is universally important in every human’s life but can be so difficult for some to achieve. This book is not theoretical, fictional, or subjective. It is an explanation of true science that will provide clarity to all who read.
